It's time to exercise!!!! Commit to be fit.
“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.” ~ John F. Kennedy
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR CHILD IS WEARING PROPER CLOTHES AND TENNIS SHOES EVERY DAY THEY COME TO PHYSICAL EDUCATION. Thanks for your continued support of the physical education program at Polo Ridge.
Attentions all parents:
Put Action in Your Lifestyle Regular physical activity is just as important to a healthful lifestyle as smart eating. Apply the same principles of variety, balance and moderation to both your food choices and your physical activities.
- Variety: Enjoy many different activities to move different muscles, such as power walking for your heart and leg muscles, gardening for arm muscles and sit-ups for abdominal muscles.
- Balance: Because different activities have different benefits, balance your physical activity pattern. For overall fitness, choose activities that build cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, bone strength and flexibility.
- Moderation: Move enough to keep fit, without overdoing it. At least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most and preferably all days of the week will do.

Philosophy of Physical Education:
I will provide your child with the knowledge and understanding of the value of being physically active. Students will also be able to demonstrate the character traits of sharing, cooperation, sportsmanship, and respecting the rights of the other classmates.
I will teach basic motor skills of skipping, jumping, hopping, galloping, sliding and running as well as static and dynamic balances. I will provide the opportunity for students to work on game and sport skills including soccer, basketball, racket sports, football, and many other games and activities. All students will be assessed throughout the year by the teacher, peers, and self. Class discussions will be used to share rules and how the games made them safe, fair, and fun.

Kids Corner: Family FitnessThe way to stop the rise in obesity, especially in children, begins at home. As children, we learn a lot from our parents. That includes how we eat and exercise. Studies show the family that plays together stays fit together. As parents we must set a good example for our children. Instead of stopping off at a fast-food joint for dinner or having a muffin for breakfast we need to make a better effort to prepare healthy meals for breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. We must also encourage our children to be more active in sports and exercise programs. By training as a family, we are not only doing good for ourselves, but we are paving the way for a healthy foundation in our children's lives that they can pass on to their children. For more information read, Kids Corner: Family Fitness<http://www.wellnesscoalition.com
We will be talking about healthy hearts and how important it is get in a routine of exercising every day and eating the right foods. At this age, I want the children to understand the importance of healthy habits and active lifestyles. Please try and get your children outside regularly and/or sign them up for a recreational sport.

SPARK is a physical education program that CMS is implementing in all elementary schools. SPARK stands for Sports, Play, & Active Recreation for Kids. This program was designed to reduce cardiovascular diease risk factors (e.g., obesity, high blood pressure, sedentry lifestyle) that often begins in childhood. These activities are designed to involve all children, be more active, incorporate social skills, and emphasize health-related fitness and skill development. Since my lessons have consisted of these factors for years, the students will not see any major changes in the curriculum besides a bigger focus on aerobic games.

FITNESSGRAM is also a program that is being implemented in all elementary schools in CMS (grades 3-5). This program is a comprehensive health-related program and computerized reporting system. These reports will allow myself to modify by program, based on the data, to better serve your children. I will be adminstrating the FITNESSGRAM two times during the year. The assessments will test aerobic capacity, body compostion, muscular strength, endurance, and flexibilty. The reports will be confidental and will not be used for grading. Students in grades k-2 will only have their height and weight documented and will do the Pacer Test for fun.
Fitness Testing for Grades 3-5
- Height & Weight: This assessment will be used to determine the students Body Mass Index (BMI) to see the appropriateness of the child’s weight relative to height.
- Curl-Up: This assessment will be used to determine the students abdominal strength and endurance.
- 90 Degrees Push-Up: This assessment will be used to determine the students upper body strength and endurance.
- Shoulder Stretch: This assessment will measure upper arm and shoulder flexibility with the right and left
- Pacer Test: This assessment will be used to determine the students aerobic capacity.
